[ARCHIVED] Magdalena de Kino, Sonora Becomes San Luis' Third International Sister City

Madgalena De Kino Mayor and San Luis Council Member Vargas holding signed agreements

San Luis, Arizona – Following the 1988 sister city agreement with San Luis Rio Colorado and the 2005 sister city agreement with Navolato, Sinaloa, Magdalenda de Kino, Sonora becomes the third International Sister City with the City of San Luis, Arizona.

After an invitation from Consul Titular Dulce Maria Valle Alvarez from the Yuma Mexican Consulate Office to consider and initiate an agreement with a Sonora municipality, Mayor Nieves Riedel and the San Luis city council approved the sister city agreement during the council meeting held September 27, 2023. The official sister city agreement was signed on September 28 by San Luis Council Member Javier Vargas and Magdalena de Kino, Sonora Presidente Municipal C. Omar Ortez Guerrero at the Western Spirit: Scottsdale Museum of the West located in Scottsdale, Arizona.

“As we continue to grow, it is important to continue to strengthen cross-border relations, develop ties for tourism economic development, and share our culture with other municipalities,” stated Mayor Nieves Riedel. “While we may be in two different countries, we share a close bond and mutual desire to improve for our community and tourists,” she concluded.

Magdalena de Kino is located 87 kilometers from the United States – Mexico Border and has approximately 34,000 residents. Their main economic sectors are agriculture, mining, and livestock. Magdalena de Kino, Sonora is also known for its tourism destinations and the quality of its touristic services and has been named one of Sonora’s Pueblos Magicos.
