ADOT Approves Cesar Chavez Boulevard Expansion: Project to Commence 2026

City of San Luis Posted on December 23, 2025

San Luis, Arizona – Last Friday, the Arizona Department of Transportation Board of Directors approved the construction and expansion of Cesar Chavez Boulevard, marking a significant milestone for the City of San Luis. The project, which has been in development for over a decade, has been awarded to DPE Construction and is expected to start in early 2026.

With an investment of over $65 million, the project will:

  • Improve traffic flow and reduce congestion along Cesar Chavez Boulevard.
  • Enhance roadway safety with upgraded intersections, signals, lighting, and signage.
  • Support the city’s continued economic growth and development.

The project scope includes reconstructing Cesar Chavez Boulevard into a four-lane divided roadway with intersection channelization, drainage improvements, asphaltic paving, pavement marking, signals, lighting, and other related work. A one-lane roundabout will also be constructed at the intersection of Cesar Chavez Boulevard and Escondido and San Luis Plaza Drive.

“This is a major win for San Luis,” stated Mayor Nieves Riedel. “This is a testament to the dedication of former and current council members, city staff, and the entire regional team who stayed committed over the years to make this long-awaited project a reality,” she added.

Construction is expected to commence in early 2026 and be completed by 2028.
