[ARCHIVED] City of San Luis Declares a State of Emergency on COVID-19

San Luis, Arizona – At approximately 7:30 p.m. today the City of San Luis adopted Order No. 2020-6 and Mayor Gerardo Sanchez declared a local state of emergency on the current situation with COVID-19 Coronavirus.

By declaring an emergency, it is ordered and directed that public access to all Parks and Recreations facilities, including athletic fields, courts, and the San Luis Senior Center are to be closed. All city-scheduled activities creating a gathering of people will be canceled; the rental of city facilities to private parties for events with canceled and fees will be refunded. The City Administrator has the authority to implement any procedures and take any action that deems necessary to carry out the intent of the declaration.

The City of San Luis is working alongside federal and state agencies, Yuma County Health Department, Yuma Regional Medical Center, and other local agencies to ensure the safety and health of all residents.  While currently, in the Yuma County and the City of San Luis there are zero presumptive and zero confirmed cases of COVID-19 the City of San Luis is taking proactive actions to minimize exposure to residents in masses.

“It is important for us to be proactive and prevent unnecessary transmission of the disease,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “With the health, safety, and well-being of all our residents our number one priority the City of San Luis has canceled all public city events for the next four (4) weeks" he commented.

Order 2020-6 was passed and adopted by Mayor Gerardo Sanchez, Vice Mayor Maria Cecilia Cruz, Council Member Mario Buchanan Jr., Council Member Gloria Torres, Council Member Jose Ponce, and Council Member Matias Rosales who participated over the phone during tonight’s special council meeting.

The rest of the City of San Luis offices and facilitates are not closing and will be continuing to provide their services as usual.
