[ARCHIVED] CITY OF SAN LUIS TO HONOR CESAR CHAVEZ

San Luis, Arizona — Back in January 2019, the Mayor and City Council of the City of San Luis, Arizona passed Resolution No. 2062; a resolution of the Mayor and City Council adding Cesar Chavez Day as an official holiday of the City of San Luis. This would only be the beginning of what was to come with the celebration of the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez.

The Cesar Chavez Life and Legacy Committee, a local committee consisting of San Luis Elected Officials, community members, and different organizations, has been working since mid-2018 in putting together a month-long celebration of various events and activities for the community to work together on and celebrate Cesar Chavez hard work.

Cesar Chavez was born on March 31, 1927, in North Gila Valley, near Yuma, Arizona. At just the age of 10, Cesar Chavez knew the struggles farm workers faced, as he was one himself. At a young age, Cesar Chavez started dedicating his life to improving the treatment, pay, and working conditions of farmworkers; founding the United Farm Works (UFW) in 1962.

“Cesar Chavez is a hero to many and an inspiration to all, who made history by speaking up for the voiceless and advocating for the rights and dignity of farmworkers,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “This is why the City of San Luis has approved to observe his birthday as a city holiday and will be working alongside The Cesar Chavez Life and Legacy Committee on celebrating his legacy the entire month of March,” he added. “Let’s continue to celebrate his history and hear from the pioneers of the movement that are still in San Luis, Arizona; by recognizing Cesar Chavez Day and honoring his legacy we are returning the favor to the pioneers and their families. We are keeping the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez fresh in the memory of all our residents,” Mayor Gerardo Sanchez concluded.
