[ARCHIVED] City of San Luis Senior Center Closed Until Further Notice

Senior Center Closure

San Luis, Arizona — Due to two (2) COVID-19 positive cases, and the rise of positive cases in Yuma County, the City of San Luis Senior Center will be closed effective immediately until further notice.

On Saturday, August 14, 2021, City of San Luis staff were informed that two (2) COVID-19 test results were positive for cases related to the Senior Center. To avoid the spread of the virus and ensure the safety of its members, the Senior Center will be closed until further notice. The Parks & Recreation Department and Senior Center staff are following the necessary COVID-19 protocols and will inform Senior Center members of the closure.

In the last few weeks, COVID-19 cases have increased significantly in Yuma County. On Friday, August 13, 2021, the Yuma County Public Health Services District (YCPHSD) reported 100 new positive cases in the region. Also, the University of Arizona’s Early Warning Sewage Testing Project reported high concentrations of the virus in all three (3) San Luis testing areas. The University’s testing program provides an early warning of an outbreak. The Delta variant, which is more infectious and spreads faster than earlier forms of COVID-19, remains a matter of concern as it continues to spread across the country.

“There has been a significant rise of the COVID-19 positive rates in Yuma County in the last few weeks. We will do everything necessary to make sure our senior residents are protected,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “The well-being and health of our most vulnerable will continue to be our main priority,” he concluded.

As a reminder, to help block transmission of the virus, face coverings are required inside city-run facilities as is allowed under the 2021 Arizona Legislation signed by the Governor on June 30, 2021.
