Border Mayors Summit

San Luis, Arizona – This past week, Mayor Gerardo Sanchez and City Consultant Ralph Velez, participated in the eighth annual United States-Mexico Border Mayors’ Summit in San Diego, California.

As part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Mexico, the United States Mexico Border Mayors convened for their Border Mayor Summit hosted by San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer and Tijuana Mayor Lic. Luis Arturo Gonzalez Cruz. The Border Mayor Summit brought together Mayors from across the nation including California, Texas, Arizona, Baja California, New Mexico, Mexico and Canada. In which, all Mayors and guests participated in discussions regarding economic opportunities, immigration, and environmental issues.

During the Summit, Mayor Gerardo Sanchez presented in the Local Collaboration to Address Cross Border Environmental Issues panel alongside Mayor Sege Dedina from Imperial Beach, California and Mr. Manuel Rodriguez Monarrez, Director of Environmental Policy in Baja California, Mexico.

Mayor Gerardo Sanchez and all 15 participating Mayors signed two resolutions; one calling for the ratification of the United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement (USMCA) and the other resolution was for the reauthorization of the North American Development Bank (NADBank) and an increase in funding for water infrastructure projects along the border.

“It was a great honor to represent the City of San Luis and the State of Arizona at the Border Mayors’ Summit,” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. “It is important to support the United States Mexico Canada Trade Agreement and continue supporting the North American Development Bank to continue the investment in border infrastructure projects that benefit all communities,” he added.
