[ARCHIVED] City of San Luis Celebrates 40th Anniversary

40th Anniversary

San Luis, Arizona – San Luis was founded in 1930 after the opening of San Luis Port of Entry I. On September 4, 1979, San Luis had requested the Yuma County Board of Supervisors to have San Luis formally incorporated as an official town. Today, the City of San Luis is celebrating 40 years.

When the City of San Luis was founded, there were only six to ten buildings on Main Street. In the 1950s San Luis came to be known as a small town. By the 1960s San Luis witnessed accelerated growth in both the commercial and residential sectors. It was not until September 4, 1979, that the Yuma County Board of Supervisors formally incorporated San Luis. San Luis became a city by the result of a combination of the labor force, the agricultural community in Yuma County and the agricultural workforce from San Luis Rio Colorado, Sonora.

When incorporated in 1979, Ms. Josefina Rodriguez was elected Mayor, Mr. Elias Bermudez was elected Vice Mayor, Mr. Charles Archibald, Mr. Jesus Canez, and Mr. Marcial Perucho were all elected as Council Members, with Mr. William Hochstatter as Recording Clerk.

Today, the City of San Luis is home to more than 33,000 residents with our population rapidly growing at twelve percent. Currently, staff members are working on new subdivisions, public safety, the 2040 General Plan attracting new businesses, and continuing the services we provide our residents.

In celebration of the 40th year, the City of San Luis is working on a yearlong celebration that will include various events and contests. We are encouraging everyone to follow us on all our social media accounts and keep in contact with us as we reveal the yearlong celebration.
