San Luis, Arizona — The City of San Luis invites all K-6, 7-12, college, and university students from San Luis, Arizona to participate in the Second Annual Cesar Chavez Art and Poetry Contest.
The contest is open to any student who is a resident of San Luis, Arizona who wish to highlight the life and legacy of Cesar E. Chavez. The theme is similar to the City of San Luis’ believes of harvesting success, prosperity and improving the quality of life for our community.
The guidelines are as follows:
- Participants can only submit one entry.
- All artwork and poetry must depict the theme “Harvesting Hope” and be related to Cesar E. Chavez.
- All work must be the artists’ or writers’ original work.
- All artwork and poetry must have a title and be signed by the artist.
- All art must be a minimum size of 8 ½ x 11’’.
- All poems must be a minimum of 100 words.
- Inappropriate language, negative connotations, guns/weapons, etc. in the artwork or poetry will not be allowed.
- Poems may be written in either English or Spanish.
All entries must be entered no later than 12:00 p.m., on Friday, March 15, 2019. All art pieces must be dropped off at the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center, located at 1015 N. Main Street, no later than March 19, 2019, by 5:00 p.m., for the judge’s review.
The winners of the contest will be announced on March 23, 2019, during “Arte en la Calle” which will take place at the Cesar Chavez Cultural Center. Then on March 31, 2019, all entries will be published on the City of San Luis Social Media accounts and website in honor of Cesar Chavez 92nd birthday.
“Cesar E. Chavez was a true hero who made history by advocating for the rights and dignity of farmworkers,” stated Council Member Africa Luna-Carrasco. “The Art and Poetry contest is designed to teach students of Cesar E. Chavez’ efforts to change the course of history for farmworkers; to inspire them to see social change, and to empower them to become a community leader,” concluded Council Member Luna-Carrasco.
