San Luis, Arizona — On October 24, 2018, San Luis Mayor, City Council, and staff participated in the Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the San Luis Port of Entry pedestrian annexation building.

The San Luis Port of Entry I is the first Port of Entry (POE) to implement the Facial Comparison Technical Demonstration. United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announced the facial comparison system; this innovative technology will be used to decrease processing time.

According to Port of Entry Director John Schwamm, the 8,300 square foot expansion of the POE has already increased the pedestrian crossing by seven percent in one month.

The Ceremony included remarks from the Honorable Jon Kyl, U.S. Senator, The Honorable Raul Grijalva, U.S. Congressman, the Honorable Mayor Gerardo Sanchez of San Luis, Arizona, The Honorable Mayor Santos Gonzalez Yescas of San Luis Rio Colorado, Mr. Juan Ciscomani, Senior Advisor for Regional and International Affairs of the State of Arizona, and Chief John Schwamm, Area and Port Director.

“I am honored to have been a part of the Port of Entry Pedestrian Annexation Ribbon Cutting ceremony, being one of the busiest non-commercial, land port of entry, this annexation building is only the beginning” stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez.  He added that the City of San Luis City Council is still working hard on binational transportation strategies that will alleviate traffic traveling north and southbound from Mexico, which include efforts in opening San Luis Port of Entry II to vehicular traffic.
