San Luis, Arizona — The City of San Luis has once again illuminated City Hall purple to promote awareness against domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the City of San Luis remains committed to raising awareness and has joined efforts with South Yuma County Domestic Violence Coalition to put an end to domestic violence.
Each year, hundreds of organizations and individuals across the state participate in the Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign. In which the goal is to educate and provide resources for citizens and victims to reduce and eventually eliminate domestic violence. The City of San Luis is committed to raising awareness by lighting City Hall purple, placing purple ribbons on all of the City vehicles and encouraging all to wear the color purple as a symbol of strength and hope to survivors of domestic violence.
“According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence there are over 21,000 calls to the National Domestic Violence hotlines the City of San Luis is proud to take a stand to put an end to domestic violence”, stated Mayor Gerardo Sanchez. The City of San Luis will continue to work with our community leaders, departments, and different agencies to bring awareness to domestic violence, Mayor Gerardo Sanchez added.
On Friday, October 5, 2018, at 8:00 a.m., the City of San Luis alongside The South Yuma County Domestic Violence Coalition will have their Seventh Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence. The walk will start at the roundabout on Main Street and Urtuzuastegui Street and will end at the Joe Orduño Park, located at 965 Park Avenue, San Luis, Arizona 85349. Yuma County Area Transit (YCAT) will provide transportation service to the start of the walk from the San Luis Gym from 7:45 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. After the one-mile walk, Ms. Diane Umphress, Executive Director for Amberly’s Place, will be providing a short presentation on Domestic Violence.
Vice Mayor Maria Cecilia Ramos commented, “Everyone should take part in putting an end to domestic violence. I want to encourage everyone to take a moment and participate in putting an end to domestic violence”.
The City of San Luis would like to thank our Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Advocates and any Victim Service Providers who offer support during these hard moments of someone's life and let us remember that “together we stand” against domestic violence.
