[ARCHIVED] CITY HALL TURNS PURPLE LIGHTS ON

City Hall Lights up Purple

San Luis, Arizona — The City of San Luis has once again illuminated City Hall purple to promote awareness against domestic violence. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the City of San Luis remains committed to raising awareness and has joined efforts with South Yuma County Against Domestic Violence Coalition to put an end to domestic violence.

The goal is to educate and provide resources for citizens and victims so that one day all violence will be reduced and eventually eliminated. The campaign encourages public, private and non-profit entities to raise awareness of the issue by embracing the color purple – the symbolic hue for domestic violence awareness – by shining purple lights on City buildings, wearing purple and sponsoring awareness events. Each year, hundreds of organizations and individuals across the state participate in the Shine the Light on Domestic Violence campaign.

“The City of San Luis is proud to declare our commitment to the fight against domestic violence,” stated Mayor Sanchez. The City will stand strong to help those in need until every person can feel safe in their own home, he added.  Vice Mayor Ramos commented, “This is the sixth year the City of San Luis participates in the Walk Against Domestic Violence, and it will not be our last." She added that she would like to encourage everyone to take a moment and think about what they can do to help put an end to domestic violence in the community and throughout the Yuma County.

We would like to take this opportunity to invite the community to join us for the Annual Walk Against Domestic Violence on Friday, October 13th, 2017 at 8:00 AM. The starting point is at the roundabout on Main Street and will end at the Joe Orduño Park.  After the one-mile walk, Diane Umphress from Amberly’s Place will be providing a short presentation on Domestic Violence.

We should also take the time to honor our Police Officers, Fire Fighters, Advocates and any Victim Service Providers who offer support during these hard moments of someone's life.

Thank you for your support and remember “together we stand” against domestic abuse.
