[ARCHIVED] Be Aware of Snakes

San Luis, Arizona — Reptiles in Arizona are most active during this time of year. The City of San Luis has already received reports of snakes in yards or near structures in some parts of the city. It is strongly recommended that if you encounter a snake, DO NOT attempt to deal with it yourself. Immediately call 9-1-1. Firefighters will respond to remove the snake from the property. Firefighters have the proper tools and equipment to relocate the snake away from populated areas and structures and release them into their natural habitat.

Taking precautions greatly reduces the possibility of a snake bite:

• Leave wild animals alone. Do not try to kill, capture or harass the animal.

• Secure your pets when a snake is located. Your pets may harass the snake, forcing it to defend itself and strike your pet or you.

• Be aware of peak movement times. Reptiles in Arizona are most active in the warmer months of April through October.

• Watch where you put your hands and feet. Try to keep your hands and feet out of rocks, wood piles and deep grass.

• Dead snakes can bite. Reflex strikes with injected venom can occur for several hours after death.
