[ARCHIVED] Operation Grad Night

20160525_102723_resized.jpg

This morning at 10:00 am, the San Luis Fire Department along with the San Luis Police Department conducted its first ever “Operation Grad Night” motor vehicle accident simulation on the football field at San Luis High School. Seniors of the SLHS witnessed for 45 minutes the dangers, and consequences of drinking and driving. The motor vehicle accident simulation consisted of two vehicles in a T-bone type collision very common when running a red light and where speed and alcohol are factors. Seniors witnessed how the police officers deal with intoxicated drivers, and the sobriety test conducted at the scene. They also got to see how much man power and effort is placed into saving lives by using the Jaws-of-Life to extricate trapped patients. Of course the show stopper is the air ambulance helicopter that landed on the football in order to transport a patient. The students saw how several agencies put all their resources under the common goal of rescuing lives. If this event persuaded at least one student to not drink and drive graduation night then it was a success. We would like to thank the following individuals and agencies. SLHS Principal Safranek, Kim Elg and her two students, San Luis PD, Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, Angel’s Towing, Careflight Air Ambulance, Council members Ramos and Torres for their attendance.
