San Luis, AZ - This morning, the City of San Luis Parks and Recreation Department proudly celebrated the ribbon-cutting of the new inclusive playground at Joe Orduño Park.
This long-anticipated project was made possible through partnerships with Campesinos Sin Fronteras Thrive Program, the Cocopah Indian Tribe, and Dave Bang Associates. The enhancements transform the playground into a space where children of all abilities can play, connect, and flourish together.
While the main structure of the playground was already in place, the project introduced several inclusive features, including a bilingual communication board designed to support nonverbal children in expressing their needs, feelings, and ideas. Additionally, the T-swings were relocated and upgraded with accessible rubber surfacing, ensuring children no longer have to cross sand to reach them. And an Accessible Whirl was added.
“The main feature of this project is creating a space where all children, regardless of ability, can integrate and play together,” said Angelica Roldan, Director of Parks and Recreation. “Our goal is to continue adding inclusive features to our parks and activities, ensuring that every child in San Luis has a safe space where they can grow, thrive, and be their very best.”
The City of San Luis remains committed to building an inclusive community where every resident feels welcome, supported, and celebrated
