Inclusive Playground Features Coming to Joe Orduño Park

City of San Luis Posted on June 11, 2025

San Luis, Arizona—The City of San Luis Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce upcoming enhancements to the playground at Joe Orduño Park. The new additions will include inclusive features designed to ensure that all children, regardless of ability, can play, explore, and have fun in a welcoming environment.

This project marks a significant first step toward promoting inclusive play by introducing features that support children of all abilities. Inclusive playgrounds foster a welcoming environment, promote equity in play, and contribute to the well-being of families throughout our community.

Through the generous donation of $22,132.27 from The Cocopah Indian Tribe and $36,695.41 from Campesinos Sin Fronteras, the City of San Luis has secured the full funding of $58,827.68 needed to cover the cost of the new equipment.

“Every child in San Luis should have the chance to play in a space that is welcoming, inclusive, and fun,” stated Parks and Recreation Director Angelica Roldan. “Thank you to the generous donations from our community partners, we’re thrilled to take the first step towards inclusive play in our beautiful San Luis,” she added.

The playground equipment, which includes an accessible whirl (a dynamic piece of equipment that accommodates up to two wheelchair users and additional children without mobility devices), an accessible swing seat added to the current swing set, a double-sided communication board (featuring images and words to support communication for individuals of all ages and abilities, including non-verbal children and those with developmental differences), and smooth rubber paths connecting all features will be coming to San Luis , August 2025. These additions will make the playground more welcoming and inclusive, allowing kids of all ages and abilities to play together.
